Drivers and fairway woods

The driver is the club most golfers buy by looking at the shaft label. We would rather see you hit it.

What we test

We start with the club you already own and record ten swings. After that we change one thing at a time: loft first, then shaft weight, then flex, then length. Changing everything at once makes the numbers meaningless, so we do not.

  • Head loft in half-degree steps
  • Shaft weight from 45 to 75 grams
  • Flex and bend profile
  • Length in quarter-inch increments
  • Grip size, if your hands need it

What most players find

Almost everyone who walks in is playing a driver that is too stiff and too long. Dropping half an inch often gives back more fairways than it costs in yards. We will show you the numbers and let you decide.

Fairway woods

If you carry a three wood and a five wood we usually test both in the same hour. We look at how they gap against the driver and the longest hybrid, and we will tell you when one of them can come out of the bag.
